What is a club officer? These are the people that develop a club, run meetings, delegate tasks, and take lead, according to Builders Club. At Hughson High School, there are numerous clubs that offer very different goals and assistance to students. The clubs are supervised by several teachers, but are run by officers, and student centered. Thus, the officers have a much better understanding of the club itself and may have a completely different perspective. So what do these officers think?
NAMI, also known as the National Association of Mental Illness, is a club that focuses on the mental health of students, members, and the community. The Social Media Assistant, Amy Alvorado, says that the club is important because it brings awareness to mental illness and its helping to decrease stigma around it. From an outsider’s perspective, NAMI may seem like a club that only talks about mental illnesses. However, Alvarado explains that it can help you find ways to help yourself or others, and there are a lot of fun club activities aside from learning new things on mental health.
HYLC stands for the Hispanic Youth Leadership Community. It is a club in Hughson High School that “connects its people together in the community and all over to share their leadership skills and educate others on hispanic culture,” comments Natalia Fuentes, the historian officer in HYLC. Natalia’s position allows her to help other officers with whatever they need, and organize events to get information out to the students. From her perspective, she says that HYLC allows her to meet new people and connect with them; through those people she says she learns and grows as a person while doing activities she enjoys. Anyone in the club can learn to love and appreciate the people around them.
The California Scholarship Federation, CSF, is a club that focuses on the academic history of a student to help them get into college. Each member must apply with ten dollars per semester that goes to scholarships. In charge of keeping track of the money is treasurer Andrea Ochoa. Ochoa states that although getting into CSF seems difficult, the club focuses on promoting good academic performance and every student is encouraged to apply. She says that many students may feel like they do not qualify to be a member, but being in the club only requires a 3.0 GPA, which is a B average. Being in it not only grants scholarships, but also the opportunity to meet like minded students and paths to becoming the best academic version of yourself.
With the multitude of clubs within Hughson High School, students likely are overwhelmed with options. Officers are some of the closest and most informed members of the club and thus have a perspective that other students may not realize. It is always a good idea to contact an officer and find out more about any intriguing club. Becoming an officer can also be an important next step after being a member of a club for some time.
