So, how did I end up going to the DMV a total of four times but passing the permit test first try? The truth is I did not know what I needed to do in order to complete this relatively simple process. In this article find out what you need to know to complete the written test process with one trip and pass it on the first try.
The first time I went to the DMV was on a Friday when all I knew was that I needed to bring a form of identification, something like mail. However, the fact is it isn´t just any form of identification. Keep in mind that if you are taking your permit test as a minor, your parents are likely the only ones that need to be identified. I, still unaware of this fact, went in and they did not accept the letters I had brought that were addressed to myself; they didn’t need my school ID card either. Instead, make sure to bring your pink slip, a guardians id card, and plenty of bills addressed to your guardians name; these should include address and name.
The second time I went to the DMV was that same Friday and I was able to gather all forms of identification; one for the permit test and, as I later found out, one for the real ID. For the picture that is needed to finalize the process, they want it to be what you look like on a daily basis so it is okay to use jewelry, just nothing that covers your ears, or white or blue colored tops so they don’t clash with the background. However, I also had to provide my social security number; I did not have it. So, I had to go back once again.
The third time I went to the DMV was perfect and I had everything. However there was a major computer malfunction and I was not able to take my test.
The final time I took my test I was close to not being able to take it. I got my number but was told that I might have arrived late. At that time it was 3:40 in the afternoon and the DMV closed at 5:00. The reason why was because the permit tests stopped after 4:30 and I still had to wait to get called up, it was 4:20 by then. Luckily I was able to take my picture and they allowed me to take my test.
As for how I passed, it was a mixture of reading and practicing. It is extremely important to make sure to stop by and get a drivers handbook, they can be found in the DMV entrance or online and will contain every piece of information needed to pass the test. It took me about 1 hour to read through the entire booklet, but if you prefer audios there are some available on YouTube. After reading the booklet the best method of study is to use online practice tests. The one I used was the ¨FREE California Permit Test¨ from the DMV-written-test. If you really want to take the extra step in studying for it, there are many videos on YouTube that will go over the hardest questions and ways to identify the answer.
Overall, the permit test process is simple. Just do not forget to bring all of the necessary documents with you. You can always complete this process online; however if you are like me, taking it in person is a bit easier if you have the time to visit the DMV. There are around 45 questions that you will have to answer and a limit of 9 mistakes; do not feel nervous if you get the first few wrong as it will alert you after answering the question.
Remember to stay calm and do not overthink the answer of the questions, as often they are obvious, and stay focused on the question you are answering. You got this!
