Youtube has decided that in the coming months creators will be required to label content made by AI. Youtube will also allow for the removal of AI generated content as long as it simulates an identifiable individual including their face or voice. Youtube does not want to delete all AI content saying “Not all content will be removed from YouTube, and we’ll consider a variety of factors when evaluating these requests.”
Some of the factors that are fine is if the content is a parody or satire, on the other hand if the content has a political figure or a well known individual the rules will be more strict.
Youtube will also have a similar system in place for music when an artist’s voice is mimicked for AI generated music. Youtube is not against the use of AI as they will be also using AI to minimize the harm of threats to users. Youtube has acknowledged that in the past AI has made more mistakes than people but still hopes to improve the safety of the user with AI as it could be safer down the line.
Any content on sensitive topics such as elections ,ongoing conflicts, public health crises or public officials will have a label visible in the video player itself. The rule will cover videos that “realistically depicts an event that never happened, or content showing someone saying or doing something they didn’t actually do.”
If a creator breaks the rule on Ai they could risk a suspension of revenue or a removal from the platform.
Because AI can cause large amounts of damage in terms of misinformation, creators will not be able to fix their mistakes if they use Ai to spread misinformation because some people may purposefully make misleading content and fix it a short time later so they do not get in trouble in any way.
Management at Youtube has said “We’re taking the time to balance these benefits with ensuring the continued safety of our community at this pivotal moment—and we’ll work hand-in-hand with creators, artists and others across the creative industries to build a future that benefits us all.”
They added “We’re still at the beginning of our journey to unlock new forms of innovation and creativity on YouTube with generative AI. We’re tremendously excited about the potential of this technology, and know that what comes next will reverberate across the creative industries for years to come.”
