On November 16, 2004, MF Doom dropped his fifth solo album, Mm..Food? And its renowned as one of his best works of his discography. The album includes 15 tracks, equating to 49 minutes. Features include Count Bass D, Angelika, 4ize, and Mr. Fantastik. Mm.. Food’s concept is, as MF Doom describes, “About the things you find on a picnic or at a picnic table.” Which is different compared to other concepts of albums. Mm..Food is also an anagram to Daniel Dumile’s stage name, MF Doom.
The first track of Mm..Food, Beef Rap, starts off with samples of Canon of Doom from Spider-Man, Would You Like a Snack? by Frank Zappa, and Hungry Wait from Wild Style. The beat feels as if it’s a villain causing havoc in a city. And as always, MF Doom’s lyrics are amazing.
Ho Cakes is awesome with the Dr.Doom references and samples. And the beat and Doom’s lyrics mesh together so well.
Potholderz is probably one of my favorite songs on this album. The 90’s feel of the beat and flow of Doom is nostalgic. And Count Bass D takes that to another level with his feature.
One Beer is a fan favorite of this album, and it honestly deserves it. Being another insane lyrical performance by Doom, and the beat really sums up how the 2000’s hip hop was.
Deep Fried Frenz talks about untrustworthy friends and really shows how you can give Doom any topic, and he delivers with lyrics no one has ever heard before.
Poo-Putt Platter, Filet-O-Rapper, Gumbo, and Fig Leaf Bi-Carbonate are just samples of old TV shows and a very upbeat 1990’s beat. The samples include Poo-Putt Platter: Incidental Music from The Fat Albert, Euell Gibbons Spoof from The Electric Company, The Invisibles from The Herculoids; Filet-O-Rapper: Euell Gibbons Spoof from The Electric Company, Mean Lene by Hubert Laws, Soul Food from Hell Up in Harlem; Gumbo: Would You Like a Snack? by Frank Zappa, Equal Gibbons Spoof by The Electric Company, Chitterlings from Hell Up in Harlem; Fig Leaf Bi-Carbonate: Euell Gibbons Spoof from The Electric Company, Dragon’s Blood by Metal Fingers, Hot Wind by Les Baxter.
Kon Karne is such a solid track on this album. Just everything from the lyrics, beat, Doom himself is all just great on this track. The cheerful beat and Doom doing Doom things mesh well with this album on this track.
Guinnesses really embraces the 2000’s feel with the Angelika and 4ize chorus. Although there is no verse with Doom in it, I still think it’s a nice track nevertheless.
Kon Queso is an amazing track with the intricate lyrics from Doom mixed in with his flow makes this track what it is, a great song. And the beat going along with everything really fits well with it.
Rapp Snitch Knishes is probably one of Doom’s most well known songs. And all of that popularity is warranted because of this being an outstanding track. Doom and Mr. Fantastik just taking turns on the beat is great, mixed in with an awesome beat, equals an instant classic for Doom’s Discography.
Vomitspit is another amazing track addition, like always when it comes to Doom, to mm..Food. Although Vomitspit does sound a little like the other tracks on this album. Many tracks on this album sound a little similar, but if you listen to the lyrics, they’re pretty different.
Kookies is a refreshing track listening to it since the beat sounds more like a villain doing something sinister. And that’s what I like about this song. But as a outro to this album, it delivers to keep up with the rest of mm..Food’s tracks.
Mm..Food? is a fan favorite of Doom’s discography and probably is one of his best albums. Just the whole album being based on food is so different, but Doom can talk about anything and it will be amazing. Mm..Food might have some tracks that are straight samples of food conversations, but I think that’s what makes it so special and different from other albums. Overall, Mm..Food? is an outstanding listen.
