As of recently Hughson High School is making a lot of new additions to its campus such as its new fence, equipment, and most notably a turf field outside of our gym. Mr. Lighthall said “We have all of our sports PE classes and athletics bunched together and with the addition of the new turf it creates an additional place for people to have PE and another place for football, soccer, track, and tennis to practice even if there’s bad circumstances such as weather or muddy grass.”
Justice Futch says “We are getting a new turf field outside of the smaller weight room which is 35 by 30 yards It’s mostly going to be used for the football players but can also be used for any other types of the sports and kids at lunch is going to provide a new space for people to do athletics especially in bad conditions such as rain, mud, and anything else that will not allow them to be on the field. It’s very convenient if we need to get weights out of the weight room due to its location so we can easily transfer weights onto the turf if any sports do some dynamic movements with heavy weights.”
The turf’s main project manager said “It’s quite easy, it really only takes 10 main steps when doing it on already flat surfaces. First, you have to prepare the area and materials, second; excavation. You will need hand tools in small areas during the excavation process. You can use a grass trimmer to clean the area and sweep all dirt from the floor, and next you have to define the perimeter and make sure where you’re placing the exact place of all your turf. Next, you place a weed block fabric which will make it harder for weeds to come though. The fifth thing you need to do is base insulation which is material mixed with rocks up to 1.5 to 2 cm, then you have to impact the base. The base must be smooth and even, with well-defined edges. After that, you have to measure, lay down, and set the new artificial grass, then you lay out the grass and trim its edges, finally securing the edges and tidying up the surface. Only now do you infill. You will need your infill materials, hand tools, and a drop spreader. The drop spreader is a key way to make sure the infill is installed evenly. Make sure you go slowly and don’t overlap the rose while dropping the infill.”
Overall, the turf will be a great improvement to Hughson High School, not only by giving more space to our athletic programs but also to help create more space for people at lunch to play at.
