Aside from Christmas, a big aspect of December is winter! The look of snow and rain make up a big part of the season, but it is important to be aware of the changes this weather can bring.
Overall, the weather in Hughson during the month of December averages a high of sixty-six degrees fahrenheit. The low however, is marked at around thirty-nine degrees fahrenheit. The image of drinking hot cocoa, wrapped around blankets, next to a fire, is made possible by this weather but it also brings dangers to our health.
Harvard Health Publishing claims that low temperatures can create risks for the immune system, skin, balance, and heart.
The rapid change in temperature sparks illnesses like the flu and colds, but it also makes it difficult to distance oneself as cold weather leads to people staying indoors; thus making these illnesses easier to spread. To counter these risks, Dr Salamon suggests getting a flu shot, or frequently washing and sanitizing your hands.
As many of us have likely realized, our skin in the winter often becomes easily dry and flaky. This is because the cold air absorbs moisture from the skin. Harvard Health publishing reveals that moisturizers with oil bases will block evaporation and humidifiers can help to restore surface moisture to the skin; Taking lukewarm showers is also said to help with dryness.
Furthermore, the cold weather and frequent rains can cause ice to form. Though clear to see, ice can still be very dangerous; no matter how little of it there is. The tiniest bit of ice can lead to serious falls on sidewalks that can cause fractures, and, probably just as important, a few seconds of embarrassment.
One of the most serious consequences of the cold is risk of heart attacks. The cold temperatures affect the body’s systems of blood flow as the blood vessels narrow and provide less blood to the surface. This can also lead to cases of hypothermia. Still, the slow flow of blood will affect the amount of blood going towards the heart and increase risk of heart attacks, warns Harvard Health Publishing. So, make sure to keep body temperatures warm by staying inside or layering clothes.
However, the cold can always be combated by dressing warmly. To keep warm this season it is recommended to layer many layers of clothing. Some seasonal must haves for everyone are thermals, beanies, gloves, scarves, coats, and sweatshirts. Even having a few extra blankets and lounge sets help keep warm and seasonal. Thermals can be layered below any kind of jean or sweat and nobody would even know you’re wearing them. Essential to keep our ears warm are beanies, but for a stylish change earmuffs are always a good option. Still, many may not like using gloves or scarves as it may feel like too much, but not only do they keep us warm, they can become a stylish accessory to elevate any outfit.
The winter season is coming and bringing many changes with it, but it is easy to counter with a little caution and layers. Stay safe and enjoy the wonderland it can bring.
