On May 17, 2019, Tyler The Creator released his fifth studio album, Igor. And as an award winning album, Igor is a great album with the storytelling, diversity in music, and just different compared to other award winning albums. Igor follows a narrative of a love triangle where Tyler is in love with a man who is also dating a woman who is pulling him away from Tyler. Igor’s genres include Neo-Soul/Synth Funk/Experimental Hip-Hop. Igor has 12 songs, equaling to 39 minutes and 43 seconds. Igor has no credited features.
Igor’s Theme as an intro track is great. It shows us what us listeners are about to delve into, which is an experimental version of Tyler The Creator. Igor’s Theme is about the feeling of excitement and anticipation of something great coming in the future.
Earfquake is the most popular song off of Igor, which is warranted since it is a great track. In Earfquake, Tyler expresses his needs for reassurance and his inability to express himself in a way that will not lead to conflict.
I Think is a good track with an odd but nice beat, sounding very synth-like. I think, is about the narrator is trying to communicate to his love interest in a straightforward manner.
Exactly What You Run from You End Up Chasing is an audio snippet of Jerrod Carmichael saying “Exactly what you run from, you end up chasing. Like, you can’t avoid, but just chasing it and just like trying. Giving it everything that you can. There’s always an obstacle.”
Running Out of Time just sounds nice with the production of the beat and synths. Running out of time is about Tyler trying all he can to make the object of his affections, but as time runs out, it seems as if his efforts are in vain.
New Magic Wand is another popular song, and is extremely different from the other songs off of Igor.New Magic Wand is more of a Gritty and loud but still synth-like, like the other tracks of Igor. New Magic Wand is a song about letting go and moving past a relationship that isn’t working.
A Boy Is a Gun is another great track off of Igor with the interesting lyrics and beat. A Boy is a Gun is a song telling us to be careful with who you spend your time with.
Puppet is an underrated song off of Igor with the well written lyrics and both the 1st and 2nd beat having great production. In Puppet, Kanye West and Tyler talk about the complexities of relationships.
What’s Good is another underrated song and has one of my favorite beats in Igor, which is very villainous and just different overall. What’s Good is about Tyler achieving greatness in the face of doubt.
Gone, Gone / Thank You is a good feeling song with the upbeat beat, and overall is a good track off of Igor. Gone, Gone / Thank You is a reflective look at heartbreak, grief, acceptance, and the subsequent healing journey.
I Don’t Love You Anymore is a very chill and calm song with the beat production being very R&B like. I Don’t Love You Anymore is about what the title name is, a person having no feelings for someone that they used to have feelings for.
Are We Still Friends? has a very 90’s or 80’s feel, which I like a lot, to it because of the beat. Are We Still Friends? is about if a friendship still stands after hard times.
But overall, Igor is an experiment from Tyler done right. Just the storytelling of a relationship through 12 songs is great. Mixed in with the beat production of all 12 songs are extremely well made.
