Today on the Weekly Outlook, we have got two students’ opinions on late start. Late start is something Hughson High School has that not many schools have that I know of. Late start happens only on Wednesday they give the students an extra hour in the morning; whether it is to sleep in, grab breakfast, or catch up on homework. There are some negatives and positives about late start.
The negatives are that it would be harder on the parents because many parents are at work by 8 am or so, and It could be hard for them to drop them off at school if it started later. I got one of the student opinions on late start. It was Aiden Barrios he stated that “ A Lot of people rely on having a late start every week. But when they find out they don’t it bums them out because they don’t have that extra hour of sleep. And it is harder for them to mentally compose themselves and catch up on homework.”
The positives of having a late start is that it helps the students focus and be more productive and active in their schooling and sports. Studies have shown that schools with later start times have huge improvement in school performances. Later start times also reduce tardiness, attendance rates, decrease in disciplinary actions, and decrease in students involved in car accidents. A student I interviewed, Cooper Taber, had to say “I think we should have it every week on Wednesday because it gives me that extra hour of sleep and it helps me focus more in class when I can sleep longer and not have to wake up so early.”
After listening to many students I talked to on campus, all of them had to say that they love late starts. And that we should have it everyday, not just twice a week. A lot of them stated that it helps them focus and get more sleep and also they have extra time to grab breakfast and drinks with their friends before school starts.
