Every time somebody talks about phones with less of a focus on social media and more on health, you might hear the term “Blue Light”. Now, this might confuse you, after all not all light coming from your phone is blue. So, what is it?
To start off, it’s known on the visible light spectrum. It’s produced by the sun, being its biggest natural source. It scatters much easier than normal light, which causes eyes to not focus quite easily. Blue light bounces off the sky which gives the sky its color. However, when artificially created, it can cause harmful effects to your eye.
Using devices super close to your face can cause strain to your eyes. The effects of this exposure and strain can cause eye problems, such as tired, strained or dry eyes, headaches, and, for those who squint, facial muscle fatigue. Though it’s not completely proven, the eye strain is secondary to the most common complaint. The most common thing people bring up is that it keeps you up at night. Your brain takes blue light as a day time light, which keeps you up further than usual. Though, thanks to a 2019 research review, it’s said that when it disrupts your sleep it can cause Cancer, Lowering Leptin Levels (Chemical that makes you feel full), and blood sugar changes.
So, is it bad to be on your phones? A bit, if you are careless about the health effects. Phone usage in my opinion can be fine as long as you don’t go overboard on it. If you really are self conscious about the health of your eyes though, sunglasses are a really stylish and helpful way to preserve your eyes and self from blue light while browsing. It’s all up to you to decide how you deal with it however.
