This year on the Hughson High School track team we have an athlete named Malakai Sumter who does the 100 m dash, the 200 m dash, high jump, and the 4 by 1 relay. He said, “I enjoyed track a lot being a multi-sport athlete, it helps me with my acceleration and speed for sports like football. Being a wide receiver means being able to accelerate and run at a fast pace. Track does a really good job helping you get and maintain speed and stamina.”
He recommends track for anyone who plays any type of sport, he says that track can help you with soccer, wrestling, basketball, football, volleyball, and tennis, basically any sport that deals with quick explosive movements and maintaining speed. He also said, “Track is a great way to meet people and travel to different schools, and you can see different types of people that play different sports other than the ones that I normally play. Another reason why I enjoy track is because it lets me show off my speed and agility to possible college scouts that would want to give me a college offer for football and or track. It gives scouts a record of how fast I am in the off season of football.”
His personal record for the 100 m dash is 11.93 seconds, and his personal record for the 200 m dash is 24.59 seconds. Lastly, his PR for the high jump is 5 ft 8 in. Overall Malakai Sumter is one of Houston high schools best track athletes, and recommends the sport to everybody in Hughson High School.
