Every 15 minutes there is a life taken by drunk driving. Since the 1990’s the level of drunk driving accidents has skyrocketed. This sparked the creation of the program called “Every 15 Minutes Program”. This program partners with police, firefighters, and even coroner offices. The main goal of this program is to decrease the amount of drunk driving accidents in young teens and adults. By partnering with schools, businesses, and county offices, the “Every 15 Minutes” program has been able to successfully demonstrate what could happen in said accidents at many schools and districts.
The funding for this program has come from mini-grants to schools and organizations that have wanted to implement the Every 15 Minutes program. Not only do they get funding from mini-grants but also the California Office of Traffic Safety. They can also take donations from anonymous organizations and or people. This program has been in place since September in 1996 and had first been presented in Chico, California. It was a huge success and has spread statewide and is starting to spread nationwide.
This program has and will continue to educate and show how risky and unsafe it is to drive while intoxicated. Loren Lighthall, the principal at Hughson High School, stated, “It takes a lot to be able to put these together and for people to actually listen. This happens too much for people to not be more aware of it”.
