Mr. Zylstra has been teaching for 38 years. Since, 1997 Mr. Zylstra has displayed an outstanding aptitude for educating the youth of HHS on mathematics. There is no question that his years of service at Hughson High should be recognized with reverence and respect. According to HHS principle, Mr. Lighthall, Teacher of the Year means, “having great relationships with students” and “being able to communicate the subject matter in a way that motivates kids and helps them grasp the material.” That is why Mr. Zylstra has been awarded Stanislaus County, 2023-2024, Teacher of the Year!
When Mr. Zylstra was asked about how he felt about being nominated teacher of the year his response was, “humbled,” explaining “there are many gifted teachers at HHS.” This is the exact attitude of a teacher who deserves to be acknowledged in his field of work. It is admirable to have the capacity to appreciate coworkers even after being validated as a standout professional in your field. In fact Mr. Lighthall explained Mr. Zylstra, “is a great teacher that is able to get through to kids,” he acknowledges as well that “[Mr. Zylstra] leads the bass fishing club, the soccer program, and the golf program.” Mr. Zylstra is extremely capable of teaching, but his portfolio also includes getting students involved in athletics and clubs where they can explore interests and make the most out of their four years here at HHS. Furthermore, Mr. Lighthall notes, “he deals with students in a positive way both in/out of the classroom.”
Teaching high school students comes with many responsibilities, but the job has many gratifying aspects. Mr. Zylstra’s favorite aspect of teaching at HHS is “interacting with students and watching them improve.” In order to help them improve, Mr. Zylstra encourages doing work on whiteboards, stating “they always amaze me with how well they do.” Students alike seem to agree, one student of his math three accelerated course praises Mr. Zylstra’s “generosity in taking time to answer questions and explain how to solve a problem.” Another student of Mr. Zylstra shared one of their favorite policies in class is test retakes. This allows students to learn from their mistakes, improve their grades and their math skills overall.
In 27 years at HHS it is appropriate to assume a teacher has wisdom to share and fond memories from doing such worthwhile work. Mr. Zylstra recalls his memories “all involve watching students or athletes grow and excel.” What could be better than seeing minds and athletes that you have so delicately guided become the best versions of themselves via your influence.
The only comment left to make on Mr. Zylstra teacher of the year accomplishment is that it is well deserved. His guidance of students in the classroom and on the field, has surely influenced students over almost three decades. Mr. Zylstra has set a great example of dedication and becoming the best you can be. This is evident as Mr. Zylstra’s outlook on challenges is “just persevere and don’t let the setback define you.”
