“It’s okay not to be okay” – Mrs. Cordano. From May sixth till May tenth, HHS and HES will be celebrating Mental Health and Wellness Week! Mental Health Week is organized by HHS NAMI, the National Association of Mental Illness. Mrs. Cordano, a counselor at HHS, expresses that it is “a school-wide effort.” School groups such as GSA, HYLC, Guitar Club, Jazz Band, Broadcasting, Leadership, and LOH all contribute to the preparations for the week. This year is only the second time Mental Health and Wellness week is celebrated but Mrs. Cordano notes that this week is about “ending the stigma surrounding mental health,” and equally important is to offer students the opportunity to learn more about mental health.
The theme for this week is “life is sweet at HHS” as NAMI hopes to focus on the “sweet” ways HHS and NAMI can support students. Mrs. Cordano explains that for every day of the week, there will be candy and activities that match the theme.
Roll with it Monday: NAMI will be giving out Rolo candy and hosting a giant bowling game at lunch. HYLC will be selling nachos and horchata.
Treat yourself Tuesday: The Churro Spot Truck and Fancy’s Cafe will be selling treats during lunch.
Guitar Club will be performing.
Donut worry Wednesday: The cafeteria will be giving out donuts for breakfast, HYLC will be selling nachos and horchata, the Jazz band will be performing, and GSA will host an activity during lunch.
Thoughtful Thursday: NAMI will be hosting a lunchtime activity where students can create calming jars.
Green Friday: Resource Fair during lunch where students will be given lifesavers for attending the booths. Up to Fourteen organizations will be attending, such as the HUSD mentoring program and NAMI Stanislaus.
Wellness week not only brings the community together for fun activities, it provides students with the knowledge and support they can get from the school and community.
