Freshman year is a big chapter of your life! You’re turning a new page and going from being in middle school to starting your teenage years in high school. Throughout your freshman year you discover so many new things. Not only about yourself but also life, friends, and relationships. While there’s tons of new and fun things you get to experience, there’s lots of struggles that you’ll face during your first year. They might not be huge struggles but you’ll have your ups and downs.
Throughout freshman year, there are so many new and fun things you get to try. During the fall, one of the biggest highlights for many is the Friday night lights and getting to go to the huge football games. Whether you’re on the field or in the stands it’s such a memorable experience for everyone. Another memorable experience during freshman year is getting to experience Homecoming for the first time! All the festivities such as the parades, dress up days, and of course the BIG game!
Brady Bridgford, a freshman said, “My favorite part of freshman year was football for sure, I can’t wait for next season when I’m on JV and get to play on Fridays.” Getting to either be in the stands or playing on the field is an anticipated experience for many freshmen. Getting to dress according to themes and cheer on the team for their big games. When football season is over, the countdown already starts for the next upcoming season. Along with the good also comes struggles, Bridgford shared that his biggest struggle was, “Definitely having to go to math class everyday.”
Along with that, it’s a big change for some people having to deal with new classes and homework. Some feeder schools for Hughson High don’t have a schedule like ours so it’s a bit of a change having several different classes to go to a day. As well as more classes, many say that they struggled with the different workload.
Karina Navarro voiced “During the first couple months as a freshman it was a little hard to keep up with my work. It wasn’t hard work but just finding the balance between being on a sports team and also finding the time for doing my work.”
Sports and being involved is really big in high school. Many want to do as much as they can which means putting yourself out there and being involved. As freshmen they tell us the best thing you can do is be involved. Join a sports team, a club, or anything else you can find to put yourself out there. As a freshman, it’s really fun to experiment and try new things and figure out what you really like to do. Joining something new might be scary at first but it will be worth it in the end when you end the season or year with so many new friendships and bonds.
Paisley Peterson said, “My least favorite part of freshman year was dealing with drama.” Drama definitely isn’t for anybody, not everyone finds themselves in a lot of drama either. During your freshman year, you discover many new things. You find out more about yourself, who you are, and who you want to be. While finding these things you also find who and what you don’t want to be. You might find yourself in drama and going in and out of friendships but that’s all a part of finding yourself as a high school student. Especially during your first year you’ll find out a lot about yourself.
With the new experiences of freshman year also comes dances! In middle school there was the occasional dance but it was nothing compared to the dances in high school. In highschool there’s the annual homecoming dance in the fall which comes with the theme that you can dress up to. A little later in the year, during the winter, a winter formal dance is held. Winter formal is a dance where you get to dress up nicer than you usually do. It’s a more serious dance than homecoming is and it’s a really fun time for everyone that goes. The gym gets all decorated to the theme and you can definitely tell the difference between that and a middle school dance. Plus, the music is WAY better.
Freshman year has had its ups and downs but also has been a very fun year so far. As it comes to an end there’s so many experiences and memories to reminisce about. First football game, first dance, trying new things, and many more. Freshman year is a big chapter in our lives that has brought many struggles and hardships but also many fun experiences that makes sophomore year so much more anticipated!
