Cross Country is a very complex sport, because of this training for the sport starts quite early. Especially for those who are involved in other sports it is important for them to start conditioning at the end of the school year for the upcoming cross country season. Every year mileage day starts on Memorial day, which they’ll still be in school this year when it does start.
Next school year the cross country team will lose some really good seniors but to make up for it, the boys frosh team can pull that weight. Coach Bernard said, “Last year we had a really strong frosh team and I believe that they will do good things this year. I’m not sure how this year will go with Sonora and Orestimba joining the league but I do believe that we will be second in the league this year.” Coach Bernard has a lot of faith in his team and knows that they can improve even more than last year.
Because cross country is so hard on the body it is good to ease into running especially when you have not ran in awhile. This is the reason cross has summer practices. Coach Bernard first talks to them about what they’re going to do for the day. Then he sends the athletes on their runs which is usually a mile to 2 miles depending on what each person is capable of. After they come back from their run they do some stretching. Occasionally after that, Bernard will have the team run 200’s or 400’s. Then, after the quick 200 and 400 meter dashes, they will go into the weight room and do abs along with lifting.
All of the people that are doing cross country next school year are very excited for a successful season.
