May 4, 1999 marks the very first International Firefighters Day (IFFD). It’s a day to celebrate those who fight fires, protect the people, protect our property, and protect the community. IFFD not only celebrates firefighters, it celebrates all the people who work or volunteer in the service sector. Equally important, it is a day to celebrate those who have given their lives in the line of duty.
In the span of 10 to 24 weeks in the Fire Academy, cadets undergo training in protective equipment, communications, wildland fire suppression, hazardous materials, and physical fitness. This training is essential in their career as they often face dangerous situations that put their life on the line. CAL FIRE is the largest firefighter force in the nation with a total of 12,000 employees. Their desire to protect and serve, as a motivator, has dictated their career and has made them a major part of the service sector throughout the United States.
On average however, sixty to one hundred firefighters lose their lives a year. Firefighters are at the frontline of rescues, accidents, fires, and more. People in the service sector contribute greatly to these endeavors and play very large roles in saving lives. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed and are celebrated as we say “thank you.”
