The phone ban is a nationwide trend that is rising up in enforcing the restriction of phone use in the states. The phone ban is supposed to lock kids’ phones up or restrict students from using them except in passing periods. This wide ban originated in Florida. The ban was made to help bullying, addiction to the devices, and the distractions. California has been on a recent rise in the recent Phone ban policy.
Kirsten Maciel, an agriculture teacher at Hughson High School, said, “My opinion on the phone and earbud policy that is going to go into effect is that I think it will be more beneficial for students.”
California started their phone restriction policy back in 2019, but they previously signed the authority to regulate smartphones during school hours.
Beau Blake, a senior at Hughson High, said, “Each teacher has their own rules, and they enforce it pretty well in my experience.”
Even though the teachers and students have their own perspectives, the other perspective we wanted to look at was a parent.
Jake Harkrader, a parent of a student at Hughson High, said “If I was the teacher I’d probably have a basket and you’d throw your phone in it as soon as you walked in the door.”
Even though there are some problems with phones being a distraction there are some pros when it comes to phone use in school.
Maciel said, “In my floral class I have my students take a photo after they’ve made an arrangement … at least it’s beneficial for me.”
