This week on the Sports Inside we are looking into the mindset of Hughson Husky Varsity Flag football players and their coach. The Huskies will be facing the Ceres Bulldogs, on Ceres home turf. This is the Huskies first year participating in Flag Football as a girls sport. They are hoping to make it far and improve a lot this season with playing and coaching. The Huskies have played only 2 games so far this season. There was a lot of miscommunication between the teams, many games got cancelled and rescheduled. So the girls have had a lot more practices than games entering this season. For a first year team the chemistry is very strong, many of the girls on the team have grown up together or gone to school for a while.
Here are the inside thoughts of some of the Varsity Flag players and coaches.
Not only the coach but history teacher at Hughson High School, Mr. Garza said “ Yes, I am very excited for the season. It’s unlike any other season because it is the first ever season at Hughson High School for flag football. I’m excited to go through the season with this group of girls and set the standard for upcoming years. The goals for this first year is to do my best at teaching the girls the fundamentals of the game and for them to enjoy competing together.”
Number 4, Junior at Hughson and quarterback Leah Hobby said “I am feeling good about this game. I am really excited for this season. I think if we keep working hard we will make the playoffs. My mindset is just to have fun and my goal is to keep improving.”
Number 15, Senior at Hughson, Peyton Avila said, “My thoughts going into this game are to alpha up. I am very excited for this season because Presley Wells will go crazy. I think our team is super fast and our running game can be strong. I hope the team makes the playoffs… I just want to have fun because I am a senior. This season i just want to have fun and hangout with friends.”
Number 13, Senior at Hughson, Tessah Burroughs said “I am hoping to kick their butt on their home field. Yes i am very excited for this season and especially the league. I think we have the right kind of athletes and a good coach that will be able to pull it off this season. I think preseason we are focusing on getting ready for the league and that we will have the potential for playoffs. My goal is to get TVL champs and my mindset is to improve every game.”
