Nicholas Brown, also known as Mr. Brown, has been teaching art for six years. All of the six years have been at Hughson High School, the same place he graduated from years ago.
Brown became a teacher so he could share his experience in arts with young learners.
His favorite part about teaching is seeing young students gain confidence in their ability to express themselves through art just like he did. Referring to some of his favorite assignments he gives, Brown said, “Probably our art toy sculpture and packaging design project. Students create an original character, a name for the character, and fictitious toy company name. Students then design, construct, and assemble the packaging completely themselves. After the packaging has been completed, students sculpt and paint their toys using polymer clay.”
Brown enjoys being an art teacher because he finds it extremely rewarding and inspirational to watch his students grow more in art at HHS. Brown stated that if he was not an art teacher he would have been, “a professional artist of some sort, or maybe animating for Disney or Pixar.”
His strategy for students who need more help is to give them one-on-one time so they can try and understand what they’re supposed to do. Even if they’re really good at art, he still wants to help them.
When he does classroom discipline he tries to “set clear expectations from the beginning of the school year to the end.”
When dealing with stress, Brown tries to keep himself occupied by doing things like projects, hobbies, and activities outside of school.
His optimal goal for students by the end of the school year is, “to feel a sense of pride and satisfaction in their artwork.”
His favorite memory from this school is “watching the kids paint the Husky Den mural last year. Seeing the pride, effort, and passion they showed while painting these.”
