The idea of Homecoming is to celebrate the school’s existence and previous alumni. This year the Hughson Huskies are celebrating their homecoming very early compared to previous years. The Huskies are celebrating their homecoming on September 5, 2024. The Homecoming Dance takes place in the Huskies’ new gym on Thursday the 5th. While the football game happens on Friday the 6th.
Justice Futch, the Hughson High athletic director and Hughson High alumni said, “I remember the dance being Friday night after the game, we would go shower then head right to the dance.”
Float building happens every year during the week of homecoming. It usually takes place fifteen minutes after school till about 9 p.m on most days. Then on the last day, Friday, the classes will have 3-4 hours to put in their finishing touches. The themes for the class floats get chosen by the ASB representatives about 2-3 weeks before homecoming. These floats will then be driven around and shown off during the parade and during the football game. The winner is announced and it makes up for a fun friendly competition between classes.
Reagan Barstow, a senior at Hughson High said, “My favorite part about homecoming is doing the float building with all of my friends, it’s always a good time.”
The parade is a big tradition in Hughson history. The parade dates all the way back to the 1960’s. Every year the whole Hughson School District is off from school so they can come enjoy the parade or be in the parade. You can be in the parade for several reasons. Some of those reasons are playing pop-warner football or cheerleader, being a highschool football player or cheerleader, or being nominated for homecoming royalty. People gather around on the sides of the streets of Hughson and wave as the people on the floats go by and the people on the floats can throw or give out candy to the little kids who came out to watch.
Juan Lupercio, a senior at Hughson High said, “I am looking forward to the parade the most as almost the whole town of Hughson goes and lines up to watch everything.”
The Homecoming football game is always a fun experience. Almost everyone in the town of Hughson goes to the Homecoming game not only for football, but also for the energy and atmosphere of the stadium. During the Homecoming game the student section is always roaring with school pride and supporting the team. They also show their support from the way they dress out, and the way they look like one whole.
Tessah Burroughs, a senior at Hughson High said, “This year I am excited for the football game the most, the student section especially.”
