Cynthia Gonzalez Newsome, also known as Mrs. Newsome or Señora Newsome, has been teaching since 2011. Newsome was inspired by the Hughson Elementary teachers when she was a little girl, which led her to follow her dreams and become a teacher.
Newsome’s favorite part about being a teacher is watching all her students succeed and seeing how much they improved from the beginning of the year. Newsome’s favorite lesson to teach is “gustar” (to like). She likes hearing all the students’ opinions on their likes and dislikes.
Newsome’s two goals by the end of the year for her students are, “making sure they pass Spanish one and are mentally ready for Spanish two and that they are thinking of their future careers.” Newsome enjoys being a Spanish teacher because she loves being able to teach and speak her culture language to the kids.
Newsome has no idea what she would have been if she wasn’t a teacher. She has been dreaming of this since Elementary school. Newsome adapts with students with special needs by letting them learn at their own pace. She tries to find her students strengths and weaknesses.
Newsome handles classroom discipline by just walking around the classroom and making sure she doesn’t hear people being rude to one another. If there is a student conflict, Newsome stated that she will, “try to understand the conflict and they will try to resolve it together.” Newsome’s strategies for students who need more help are trying to put them into a seating chart so they can make more friends and get more help from them so they can understand better.
Newsome’s way to maintain work-life balance is to get eight hours of sleep every night and exercise daily. Her advice for someone who wants to be a teacher is to TA for an Elementary school as a senior to see if you like being around kids. Newsome has so many amazing memories here that it is hard to choose from but she loves all the memories regardless.
