This past Wednesday, the TVL Opener was held at Mavis Stouffer Park in Ripon. This was the first of three league meets, and we got a taste of this year’s competition.
Results:
Varsity Boys: First
Varsity Girls: First
Junior Varsity Boys: Second
Junior Varsty Girls: Second
On the Varsity side, the boys were able to pull away from Ripon and beat them by nine points, and the girls beat Hilmar by four In Junior Varsity, both the boys and girls teams were contested by Ripon.
When asked about the team’s performance, Bernard, the coach of the Cross Country team, stated, “I think we ran about as well as I could’ve hoped, especially at the Varsity level. I was nervous going in, I knew that Ripon was going to be tough for us on the boys side, and Hilmar on the girls side. But we did what was necessary to run with the heat, and we did really well.” It was nearly 100 degrees on this day, so the runners had a tough time running.
This meet was an eye opener for the Huskies, now having a picture of where they can lead the team from here on out. Bernard’s input for the future of the team, he went on to say, “We’re on track to win the league title right now. Assuming that we continue to improve, the girls team has a pretty good shot at top 3 in the section, and that’s important because the top three teams qualify for the state meet. Also, the boys are going to need to improve a little bit more, but we need to start thinking about being top three as well, a month ago it wouldn’t have been realistic to start talking about top three in sections, but the way we’re improving, it’s looking a lot better.”
There is still a lot of improvement necessary to be comfortable with knowing the Huskies can grab the a title and get high placement at the section meet.
The next league meet for the Huskies is in two weeks, with a FNL meet this Saturday, so we won’t know much until then.
