This past Saturday, September 14, the Huskies raced at the Kim Duyst Invitational, one of the largest meets of the season. Here, the team was more focused on improving their times rather than placement, and they ran their hardest.
The meet started off with the Freshman/Sophomore races, where we had some boys, this being their first time running a two kilometer race this season, getting under 8 minutes and set personal records. Their main goal was improvement, and they are definitely heading in the right direction.
After that, during sunset, the JV races began. The girls ran good, for many of them this was their first 2k race ever, and they did well. Noeli Gomez-Orozco, one of our top girls on the team, ran and placed 3rd. She said, “My experience with this meet was really good. I was really confident but also a little bit nervous because this is only my second time running the course.” For the boys, the majority of them ran under 8 minutes as well.
By the time it was completely dark, the Varsity runners were released. In this race, the Huskies ran their Varsity “Bee” team. They may not have had the best placement, but every single runner on the team set a new PR for themselves. Juan Palos, a freshman and our number one runner in this race, said, “I thought my performance was great. Honestly, my time was better than what I expected to get.” When asked about the experience, he stated, “You couldn’t really see anything while you’re running, so a lot of people were falling. The course was quick and fast and the cheering kept pushing me to do better. It felt fresh outside and it was just a good time.”
This upcoming Friday, the Huskies Varsity team will be heading down to Irvine to run in one of the biggest meets in the Nation, the Woodbridge Invitational. Then on Saturday, the other Huskies will run at Loop the Lake fundraiser in Stockton, in order to keep their legs moving.
