Starting October first, Hughson High school wants to enforce a new phone policy. This policy enforces no phones allowed at all during class and only during break. A lot of teachers, students, and parents have very strong opinions about this upcoming policy.
Many people have different opinions because of different views. As Cindy Newsome, one of our Spanish teachers stated, “Yes, I agree with the new phone rule, because I believe phones are distractions and we should focus on school.” Although she is true, some people believe phones could also enhance our learning experience and provide valuable support in various subjects of school.
Not only that, but phones could also be used for emergency situations, knowing that schools all around us have been getting threats or have had situations like school shootings and lock downs. In those situations students need to have their phone or at least have access to a phone. In those situations students need to be able to contact their parents, siblings, families, or loved ones and let them know what’s going on or possibly say their last goodbyes. Not only that but phones help students manage time properly. Students use their phones for various reasons such as setting reminders to do assignments, contacting students for group projects, and keeping track of their schedules. High School students that are involved in sports need access to their phones during the day to check what time practices are and what time they end.
Freshman Mariah Ruiz said, “They are just wasting time on this policy because no one is going to listen and everyone is still gonna go on their phones during class.”
Students use their phones as a reward after finishing an assignment. Now that phones are no longer allowed in class some students won’t have a motivation to do their work. Phones have many positive effects on a student’s perspective in school. Nowadays phones are very important in a student’s everyday life.
Freshman Liliana Vera Wood stated “School is already so boring, why make it worse then what it already is?” As we interviewed multiple students, they disagreed with this phone rule and said how many students use their phones to look stuff up or keep track of their schedule using an app called Saturn. Phones have never been a problem at Hughson High School, so why are they deciding to ban them now? In High School, students deserve to have their phones; they are old enough to make their own decisions and be mature.
