The Husky Den is now in its second year of operation. Located in the library, it is a meeting space where all kinds of activities take place. In the quest for more knowledge, The Paw interviewed counselors Jameelah Cordano and Norma Teague about their beliefs regarding the Husky Den.
Cordano and Teague stated that its’ creation was motivated by the belief that Hughson High School needs a “calming/welcoming area for students to go.” Before, there was not any real quiet place to meet on campus.
What should students know about it? It is open during lunch every Tuesday and Thursday; although, there is a capacity limit, first-come, first-serve. Cordano and Teague mentioned how most of the supplies in the Den came from grant money; therefore, it is important students take the utmost care of the space. The kind of activities that happen in the Den include student groups, club meetings, committee meetings, Pack Time presentations, individual and group counseling, mentoring, and more.
The counselors’ ultimate hope is that the Husky Den provides a consistently safe space for our students, a place to go where, say, one needs a break. So far, Cordano and Teague are satisfied with how things have been going. “So far, so good!” they put it, and note how student usage is growing day by day.
So far, the Husky Den has been a great success, and hopefully it will continue to help our students for the near future.
