The Hughson High School is on their way to continue the powderpuff game tradition. The game is going to take place on Tuesday Oct. 1. The Junior and Senior squads have three practices from Thursday, Sept. 26 to Monday, Sept. 30.
Reagan Barstow, a senior powderpuff player said, “This year is going to be a better year because we know more from playing last year, but we need to work on our route running more this year.”
This year is going to see a new scene with the bringing in of Girls Flag Football to our sports list. Hughson High School added Girls Flag Football after many years of requesting it, and seeing if our league had enough people in it to play. With a lot of schools already having a Girls Flag Football team it was very easy to add in our school for the league because schools always want more competition to play. Since flag football has been added people are expecting higher scores since there have been girls practicing flag football for a sport, and have a better understanding for the game.
Tessah Burroughs, a senior powderpuff player said, “I think that the game this year is going to be more competitive because of the flag football girls knowing more about the sport so they will be better.”
The school is also doing some other new things with powderpuff itself with the addition of student coaching. Even though student coaching is what the original concept for powderpuff calls for, Hughson High didn’t follow that trend. Instead they just had parents and football coaches to help out and coach the girls. Even though the boy students have taken over the main coach positions of offensive and defensive head coach, there will be an adult there to assist.
Presley Wells, a junior powderpuff player said, “I like that we have the boys coaching us this year. I think that it will make it a lot more fun because they will get to tell us what to do as they are football players for school already. I think that we should continue doing this rather than having the adults coach because for every sport you never have people your age coach you. And I think it will make the game more competitive.”
