This supernatural horror movie, Hereditary, is directed by Ari Aster. He is known for writing and directing Hereditary, Midsommer, and Beau is Afraid. The film was originally released June 8, 2018 and has received positive reviews with a 90% rotten tomato review and 87% on Metacritic. The cast consists of Toni Collete as Annie, Alex Wolff as Peter, Millie Shapiro as Charlie, and Gabriel Byrne as Steve.
Annie was estranged from her mother but when Charlie was born she wanted her mother Ellen to be involved. This family goes through the loss of Annie’s mother, grandmother to Peter and Charlie who was mentally ill. Unbeknownst to the family, Ellen was grooming Charlie to take on the spirit of Paimon, her demon husband. Charlie gets killed in an accident orchestrated by the cult and Annie attends group therapies for grieving parents and meets Joan, a woman who lost her son and grandchild. Joan tricks Annie by saying she’s teaching her the way of contacting spirits of their dead children when in reality she was binding her family to Paimon. Her family then starts falling apart with Peter slowly losing his mind and Annie finding out Joan knew Ellen all along and lied about her son and grandchild’s death. Joan was Ellen’s second hand leader in the cult who she refers to as Queen Leigh. Annie tries to fix the mistakes she made but ultimately ends up passing away along with her husband Steve and Peter’s weakened mind gets possessed by Paimon, his soul long gone.
Overall I enjoyed this movie. There aren’t many movies about cults and witchcraft, it’s almost always an indirect part of supernatural movies, mainly the demons’ backstory but never really the plot unlike in the witch and hereditary cults are actually involved in the families lives changing them for the worse using them as sacrifice for their practice.
