On Friday the 11th, Hughson High School hosted their cancer awareness high school game. Those who attended the game wore pink in honor of our cancer survivors. Not only did Hughson host a cancer awareness high school football game, but we also hosted a Cancer Awareness run/walk on October 5th at 9am to 10am at Fontana Ranch Park.
The reason we wear pink for cancer awareness is because it symbolizes healing and comfort, which our cancer survivors are in need of. Not only that but pink is also a loving and nurturing color. While wearing pink, you also show respect and support for others in the fight of their life. During these events, Hughson was also raising money for the Hughson Fire cancer fundraising. Hosting these events not only shows our support and respect but also shows our supportive community.
Deanna Ricks who had breast cancer for eight months and had to get surgery stated, “It is very heartwarming and nice to see Hughson putting on an event to raise money and support others with this disease.”
Cancer awareness is extremely important because it lets these brave and kind souls know that they are not alone in this battle and they have many people who support them and idolize them and their bravery. During cancer awareness month there are many events getting put on to raise funds for cancer research and promoting early diagnoses. Not only are there many different kinds of cancers, but more than half of cancers are preventable.
The Hughson Cancer Awareness run/walk raised $1500 to put towards the Hughson Fire cancer fund. The amount of money they raised shows just how much the Hughson community comes together and provides for others. We were honored to be able to see everyone come out and support our runners and walkers in this memorable event.
Cienna Guillette said, “there was not a lot of show out, but it was fun being on the corner and cheering people on and providing the runners and walkers with water.”
The Hughson High School Volleyball team, Cheer team, and Football team have been showing cancer awareness at their games to support the community. The volleyball team has been wearing pink ribbons in their hair and a pink warm up shirt before their games, the cheerleaders have a pink bow for the month of October, and the football players have been wearing pink gloves and pink socks.
The football game was another big win for varsity. Everyone wore pink, and people were saying, “it was a game for the books.” It was nice seeing the students of Hughson, and even parents, wearing pink to support breast cancer. Throughout the football game, the student section was hyped up throwing pink powder in the air with many T-mobile goodies. The Hughson Football team had a tough fight against Sonora.
