The Hughson Huskies have not won a TVL (TransValley League) banner for football in 27 years. This year the Huskies have a really good chance to come home with a banner at the end of the regular season. The Huskies come off a recent win of 52-51 against Sonora High School. The Huskies are currently undefeated in the TVL and have Orestimba and Hilmar High School. The team currently has a no lose mentality for the rest of the season.
Daniel Sexton, Defensive Coordinator for the Huskies Varsity team, said “If we want the banner for ourselves we still have to lock in for the next 2 weeks and beat Orestimba and Hilmar.”
The last team from Hughson to win TVL was the 1997 team. This team went undefeated throughout the season and went on to win a State Title. This team went down in history and is still remembered to this day. With their accomplishments it is hard not to know of the ‘97 team if you’re from Hughson, and even if you’re new to Hughson. This year the team has the opportunity to be in the record books.
Lawson Aviles, a junior on the Varsity team who transferred this year from Pitman High School, said “When I got to Hughson, this was one of the first things I heard about the football team’s history because they had such a big impact on the school and the town of Hughson.”
The Huskies are going to face the Orestimba Warriors this week. They then are going to face the Hilmar Yellow Jackets next week. These are formidable opponents and with the Modesto Christian game still up to a mystery of if it’s going to be played, the Huskies might get a late second bye week. If the Huskies place first in TVL not only do they get that banner and their names in history, they get the first seed in Division 5 for playoffs and will have a first round bye.
Phil Tubera, the Offensive Coordinator for the Huskies Varsity team, said “The main goal is to win State, but we are going to take it one week at a time and focus on the opponents ahead of us.”
