The Hughson Huskies added a new sport to their catalog this year, and it was the girls flag football team. This sport has been added because the TVL schools already had their own teams, and it was very easy to get involved. With the addition of flag football it opened up a new sport for girls to play during the fall season. Now girls have the option to play flag football, volleyball, cross country, and cheerleading.
Presley Wells, a Junior on the varsity flag football team, said, “I was excited that they added flag football because it gave me a chance to get a coach I haven’t had before and to play a new sport that I haven’t played yet.”
The flag football team is currently in first place in the TVL. They have finished the season 13-6. This is the girls first year in flag football and they have already dominated and won a TVL banner. With this being their first year many people are very surprised, but the team was very happy and believed in themselves the whole way.
Mrs.Wells, said “I think it is pretty nice that we won TVL as this being our first year ever playing. I think it is an accomplishment as a team that we worked together throughout the season to win that.”
With the players being the reason the big plays happen, the coach that is behind it all is Charlie Garza. Garza is currently the varsity baseball coach for the Huskies. Garza is also a history teacher at Hughson High. Garza is currently solo coaching his flag football team, with the help of the JV flag coach every once in a while. He said, “I would like to get a guy to help me out with the team next season, but it would have to be the right person. I would like them to have the same mindset and knowledge of the game.”
