On November 9, the Hughson Huskies Flag Football team left Hughson to make their way to Cosumnes River College to see if they would win sections. This was the Huskies first year playing flag football and to the surprise of everyone, they made their way to the Section Championship for D4. The girls were seated 7th in the TVL , but that didn’t stop them from going out and winning every game they played. The Huskies played Colfax, an undefeated team, but beat them with ease. Colfax was ranked first in the TVL and beat Escalon to put them into the championship. As the Huskies beat them 26-13, they played an amazing job keeping the ball and having a strategy throughout the game. The Huskies have become so close this year, like a family, many of the seniors will be missed as we have 11 leaving. It was a great way for them to go out this way making history and being the D4 Section Champions to have the underclassmen keep that going and make their way there again next year.
Sophia Sanchez said, “I am beyond proud and grateful to have been given the opportunity to be on the very first girls flag football team this year, with time we have truly shown that hard work does pay off, because look at us now we made Section Champs! I will forever cherish his team because of the memories we’ve made I will miss all the girls including the best coach ever ‘Garza’.”
Peyton Avila said, “We were just happy to get to sections but once we stepped on the field it clicked for me, ‘Why not us?’.”
Finley Wells said, “I am so grateful for all the girls on this team and the memories we created throughout the season. I am very thankful to get to experience a high school sport with my sister and getting to be there throughout the whole entire season to cheer everyone on. I can’t believe we won section Champs. It was an amazing experience to have as this being the first ever year of flag football for Hughson. I will miss everyone as this being the last time we play together as a team but what better than to end with us being Section Champs.”
Morgan Bleakley said, “It was really cool to experience, and be a part of, to be section champs with this team, it is something I will never forget and I will always be grateful to be a part of.”
