The 2024 Cross Country season is coming to an end. With that being said, we must appreciate all of the athletes, coaches, and supporters who have put their hearts into this sport in order to achieve greatness. The thousands of miles ran, the early mornings, and even the moments of struggle, all paid off. There were significant improvements, a great number of goals reached, and many friendships made along the way. This was an important season for the Huskies. Therefore, let us begin a recap of their accomplishments.
Screamin’ Scott Showdown (2.2 mile course): Boys #1, Girls #3. The 2024 season opener. This was more of a “rustbuster” meet since the course was shorter than the usual 5 kilometers.
Hughson Supercross Invitational: Frosh/Soph Boys #1, JV Girls #3. The Huskies annual invitational, on our home course. This meet is majorly meant for fun with the mud pit, but it can get competitive with the rewards of who makes it there first.
TVL Championships: Varsity Boys #1, JV Boys #1, Varsity Girls #2. This was a great victory for the Huskies because it has been a many years since multiple championship levels have been won by the team. Although the Varsity Girls fell short, next year a championship team awaits once all the runners are healthy and at 100%.
CIF Sub-Sections: Varsity Boys #2, JV Boys #2, Freshman Boys #3. All five levels of teams sent to this preliminary meet qualified for Sections. Next years goal is to make teams and qualify in all seven.
CIF Section Championships: Varsity Boys #2, Varsity Girls #5, JV Boys #8, Freshman Boys #3. Although the Varsity boys were second, they achieved their overall goal of qualifying for the state championship, which, depending on who you ask, can make up for missing out on a section banner. The Varsity girls were still battling injury and sickness, but they still performed quite well, just shy of a spot to state. The JV boys did well considering they ran against division 1 and 2 schools in the section. The Freshman team ran great. Their performance shows that they have potential to be great within the next few years.
In the end, the Varsity Boys team, as well as Varsity Girl individual qualifier Sophie Benham, are off to participate in the CIF D4 State Cross Country Championships on Saturday, November 30th, located in Fresno. Good luck to those eight athletes! Go Huskies!
