Katye Maki also known as Mrs. Maki has been teaching for about 13 years. At a very young age Mrs. Maki knew she wanted to become a teacher. A lot of teachers inspired her to want to pursue this career. Mrs. Maki said, “I realized the first couple of days in college I knew I wanted to change from a 3rd grade teacher to a band teacher.” Once she knew that she wanted to be a Band teacher she went through with it. During Mrs. Maki’s credential program she asked Mrs. Ella Webb from HHS to observe her band class. Maki said she got blessed and got offered a job here at Hughson High to become a band teacher herself.
Mrs. Maki’s favorite part about teaching is getting to know all her students. Mrs.Maki’s favorite lesson to teach is whenever they get the chance to try a new instrument. Mrs. Maki enjoys being a band teacher because of her love for music. If Mrs. Maki was not a teacher she would love to be a musician of some sort.
Mrs. Maki’s goal for her students by the end of the school year is for her students to grow into well-rounded musicians that perform together with excellent listening skills. Mrs. Maki’s way to adapt with students who have special needs is to find out their strengths and weaknesses. Mrs. Maki likes to set ground rules in the beginning of the school year about classroom discipline. Mrs. Maki’s solution to student discipline is to get both sides of their story and figure out the problem one on one.
When students are struggling Mrs. Maki tries to find what is making them struggle. How Mrs. Maki deals with stress between work-life is to set boundaries for herself and focus on one thing at a time. Mrs. Maki’s advice to people who would like to become a teacher is to observe as many classes as you can. Mrs. Maki’s favorite memory at this school from teaching is when the band’s audition was accepted by Disney Performing Arts.
