The closing of Mainstreet in Hughson marks the end of an era for this small town. Mainstreet’s deli has been around since 1924 when it was built by Lester Wheeler. The main street deli was a family favorite from breakfast to lunch; Mainstreet served smoothies, coffees, sandwiches, and many pastries. During this summer mainstreet started selling their mainstreet sweets ice cream which was enjoyed by many teens this summer, the feeling of riding your bike with your friends downtown in the summer heat and cooling down with the Mainstreet ice-cream will never be the same again. With Mainstreet being gone a new restaurant will be taking its place.
Mariah Ruiz stated, “I am going to miss Mainstreet Deli since it was my favorite place to go get smoothies with my friends. Although Mainstreet is leaving, nothing will ever replace the amount of memories me and my friends have made every summer going down there.”
As Mainstreet is closing many have suspected that Mainstreet will be turned into a new fish & chips that will either be loved or hated by the community of Hughson. Fish & Chips will be serving numerous foods having more options for guests than Mainstreet. People assume Mainstreet will be remodeled inside for the new restaurant to take its place.
Joss Antis said, “with Fish & Chips taking its place I am excited to try the new food and see if it is worth it or not. I am going to miss Mainstreet though since it has been around forever and has been mine and my family’s favorite to pick up smoothies and lunch from.”
Although some are excited for Fish & chips to open many are not wanting Mainstreet to leave. Liliana Wood stated, “I find it weird that they are choosing fish & chips to take the main streets place since it doesn’t fit the small town of Hughson and seems like it belongs by the beach.”
Although Main Street is gone, it’s safe to say that Main Street will never be forgotten and will always be loved by the community of Hughson. Mainstreet was a favorite place for an after school snack or meal. Now the community of Hughson needs hope that Fish n’ chips can replace all the memories people have made at Mainstreet Deli.
