As a frequent movie watcher, I have seen plenty of romantic comedies perfect for watching on valentines day. Here are a few of my favorites.
- How To Lose A Guy In 10 days – 2003
An advice columnist, Andie Anderson(Kate Hudson), tries pushing the boundaries of what she can write about in her new piece about how to get a man to leave you in 10 days. Her editor, Lana (Bebe Neuwirth), loves the idea, and Andie goes to find a man to use for the experiment. Enter executive Ben Berry(Matthew McConaughey), who is so confident in his abilities to make women fall in love with him, that he makes a bet with his employer saying that he can make any woman fall in love with him in 10 days. When Andie and Ben meet, their plans do not turn out as expected.
This movie will forever be a timeless classic. It’s lighthearted and charming with good chemistry between the two leads. Will forever recommend this.
- 50 First Dates – 2004
Marine veterinarian Henry (Adam Sandler) sets his heart on romancing Lucy(Drew Barrymore), but she has short-term memory loss; she can’t remember anything that happened the day before. So every morning, Henry has to win her over again. Her family is very protective over her, so Henry must convince them that he’s doing it for love.
Yet another classic with Adam Sandler, this movie is funny and cute and everything you could possibly want out of a romantic comedy. This movie raises standards in the best way possible.
- About Time – 2013
When Tim Lake (Domnhall Gleeson) is 21, his father (Bill Nighy) tells him a secret: the men in their family can time travel. Although he can not change history, Tim decides he will use his abilities to get a girlfriend. He ends up meeting Mary(Rachel McAdams), falls in love, and finally wins her over with time travelling and a little scheming. However, as his life progresses, Tim finds that his power can not protect him and his loved ones from the challenges of ordinary life.
This is more of a drama rather than a comedy, but still worth the watch. It is fun, wholesome, and teaches important life lessons throughout. If you want a good cry as well as a good laugh, I would highly recommend this movie.
- To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before – 2018
Lara Jean(Lana Condor) writes love letters— more like good-bye letters— to her crushes. To put her feelings on paper is to release their hold over her. But when these secret letters from years past somehow get mailed out to these boys, she will have to face the consequences. One of the boys who received a letter is Josh (Israel Broussard), her sister’s very recently ex’d boyfriend whom Lara Jean actually liked before Margot (Janel Parrish) ever did. Not wanting to betray her sister, she fakes a relationship with letter-boy Peter (Noah Centineo) to keep Josh from any thoughts of a relationship with her.
A very popular Netflix movie series for a reason, it is everything one can hope for in a teenage romance film. It is cute and endearing, but also leaves you wondering what will happen next, meaning it will keep you entertained the entire film.
- Penelope – 2006
Born with the snout of a pig, young Penelope Wilhern (Christina Ricci) spends life as a virtual prisoner in her home. Believing that the only way to break the curse is to marry one of her own kind, she meets a number of suitors, but all reject her. Two devious men, one with a grudge against the family, hire a man (James McAvoy) to pose as a suitor, but complications arise when he begins to fall in love with Penelope, and she makes a bid for freedom.
A very cute childhood film, but that doesn’t make it any less great. It is wholesome, cheesy, and whimsical, which is how it made it in my top picks.
- Set it up – 2018
Two overworked and underpaid assistants come up with a plan to get their bosses off their backs by setting them up with each other.
A newer romantic comedy that gives the same feeling the older movies do. It was exciting, funny, and had me cheering when the main characters finally got together.
