Last Wednesday, March 19th, the Huskies Track and Field team went to Escalon to participate in the first TVL meet of the season. The Trans-Valley League this year consists of Hughson, Escalon, Hilmar, Sonora, Ripon, Orestimba, and Ripon Christian (although Riverbank was previously entered in this meet and showed up, they are no longer in TVL). This meet held only relay events, but of all major distances, from 4×100 to the Distance Medley Relay 4,000m. There are a lot of separate open and varsity events for each relay, so I will list the final meet results. The Huskies placements are as follows:
Varsity Boys: 2nd
Varsity Girls: 4th
Open Boys: 1st
Open Girls: 3rd
All parts of the team are in the running for solid placement throughout the league meets. I have noticed that there were some timing issues, but we cannot complain about things not in our control.
Both sprinters and distance runners had great races. There were a few baton drops, but otherwise the running portions were a good effort. I do want to note the distance runners though. The girls distance team was able to set a schools record in the 4x800m with a time of 10:25. And the men’s distance team was able to run the schools second best DMR time with a 11:16.94, a little over 8 seconds off the record. Adrian Andrade, a senior distance runner and the 400m leg of said DMR, says, “I feel like the distance team was extremely dominant at TVL Relays.”, “The varsity boys also took second place in the Distance Medley Relay and lost in a close race against Riverbank ONLY DUE TO THE FACT that we had dropped the baton which set us back at least 3-5 seconds. We also broke the school record for the DMR on the boys side according to athletic.net in the records section of the Hughson Huskies home page. I have faith in that same exact team and that we will beat Riverbanks DMR team the next time we do compete”.
This was a special meet for some, as it was the only chance that they get to run relay events. Adrian also said, “I love running relays because everyone in your relay team depends on one another and runs as hard as they can so that they do not disappoint their team, it can truly bring people closer together right after a hard relay race knowing that they ran their all for their teammates”.
With this performance, the huskies are looking good in the near future in league meets. For those competing in upcoming track events, good luck and do your best!
