As the new school year begins, the Hughson Varsity Volleyball girls are ready to start the season. After many weeks of summer practices, their first home scrimmage this season against the Waterford Wildcats was this past Thursday.
According to their new coach, this year’s team is very strong both offensively and defensively. Coach Beers said, “We’re really strong offensively. We’ve got some amazing hitters, and we actually have a really deep bench. We don’t have girls on this team that can’t compete.” After Coach Beers coached the freshman team and helped referee for the JV team, she and her team were ready to play.
Waterford started with the serve, giving the Lady Huskies a chance to serve, receive and set the ball first. Like Coach Beers had said previously, there aren’t girls who aren’t able to compete—especially the hitters, as each and every hitter came out aggressive and ready to play. The team had about twenty-five kills at the end of the three twenty-minute sets. Olivia Piazzia led the team with eight kills, followed closely by Paisley Peterson with six kills.
On the other hand, the defensive team passed perfect balls to setters Julia Daniels and Emery Visaraga. The girls made very calculated sets, making sure to set every one of their hitters to catch the other team off guard.
When asked what the goals for the game were, Coach Beers said, “…let everyone continue to gel out and find confidence with one another…” From the perspective of an observer, it’s fair to say that all the girls worked well with each other and that there were very few miscommunications in the game.
Even though the game was just a scrimmage, and there was no real score, it’s safe to say that the Lady Huskies would have crushed the Wildcats in a 3-0 win.
