This past Friday was the second home game for the Hughson High Football Team. The Student Section theme, chosen by the ASB Leadership class, was ‘Galaxy.’ Recently, some students, along with Mr. Garza, put together an Instagram page to promote students who want to show their spirit and support for their school.
Avery Steffen has stated, “We thought it would be nice to advertise the school’s Student Section. In doing this, we hope that the players feel the support from their peers and families. As a student, I like being able to dress up with my friends and see what other outfits or costumes fellow students choose to wear”. Hughson High School History teacher Charly Garza helps the students come up with ideas for cheers and make rules for the Student Section while the ASB Leadership class and a community sponsor purchase and hand out all of the themed giveaways.
When asked if Garza would ever consider making a Student Section Club, he thought that it would be a great idea to help students become more involved. Garza explained, “When I heard that there were people who wanted to make the Student Section better, I thought that was a great idea, and Friday nights are really fun, and students have more fun when there is a more energetic student section,” said Garza. “It’s more organized and planned, and so I wanted to do everything that I could to help those students do what they could, and give them a little bit of direction.” He also says, “The past two home games have been the best, I’ve been announcing for seven or eight years, and it has been the best Student Section that I’ve ever seen.”
It will be interesting to see what becomes of this Student Section, how it plays out with other sporting events, and what will happen once the students running the cheers and the Instagram leave. Will the HHS student section die with the graduating class of 2028, or will it live on? Garza wanted to help students by showing his support in wanting to make the Student Section better for everyone.
We are excited to see what the future holds for the Hughson High Student Section over the years.
