Husky in the Hot Seat: Mrs. Newsome

Hailey Dimter, Staff Reporter

Hailey: Your name and what do you teach?

Ms. Newsome: My name is Cynthia González Newsome, I go by Cindy Newsome, Sra. Newsome or Mrs. Newsome! I teach Spanish 1, 2, and 3 and I am also the HYLC Advisor.

Hailey: What made you want to teach that subject/class?

Ms. Newsome: I Love this question because I went to college and prepared to be a bilingual elementary school teacher.  When Mrs. Costa retired (my Spanish teacher), Ms. Vasquez came over to the high school to teach Spanish, I was finishing up the credential program.  I took the 3 Spanish CSETs in Sacramento and applied for the position.  It was a dream come true, actually I never imagined I would teach at the high school I attended!

Hailey:What made you want to teach at HHS?

Ms. Newsome:  I love Hughson, I love living in Hughson and I love teaching in Hughson.  I especially love teaching Spanish to Hughson High School students.  I used to be a teacher’s assistant or paraprofessional.  I worked at Hughson Elementary teaching English to students who spoke languages other than English.  I also worked at Fox Road Elementary, I worked in the Math Lab and in the Language Lab. So you see, I really like working with young people because you guys are going places, just like Miss Voss, she was my student!

Hailey:What do you love most about teaching overall?

Ms. Newsome: I think what I love about teaching overall is that I get to help students in their four year journey that is your high school career.  I tell my students to join clubs, join sports, or choir or drama or leadership, renaissance, etc.  Have fun and learn to get your work done at the same time!  Four years goes by fast, one is about to go by!

Hailey:What’s your favorite thing about the school and the staff and students?

Ms. Newsome: My favorite thing about the school is the PEOPLE!  Everyone is super smart and awesome.

Hailey:If you could change anything about the school what would it be?

Ms. Newsome:I can’t think of anything I would change, I am loving Brown Bag Wednesday’s.  That would be awesome if it stays!

Hailey:If you could teach any other subject(s) what would they be?

Ms. Newsome:I love teaching Español because I think Spanish is awesome, it opens up another world!  I did take photography all four years in high school so I think that would be cool to teach.

Hailey:What’s one of your favorite things that you do for your students besides provide them with excellent education and knowledge?

Ms. Newsome: I like to sing “Feliz cumpleaños” to my students.  It’s the Birthday Song in Spanish and they will get a friendship bracelet.

Hailey:If you could take the entire school on a fully paid(completely covered) trip to anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Ms.Newsome: This is awesome!  Pack your bags, we are going to Chichen Itza on the Mayan Riviera, it’s on my bucket list!  We are going to see some Mayan ruins and swim in the Gulf of México!

Hailey:What is one piece of advice that you were given that has always stuck with you or a piece of advice that you always go by or live by?

Ms. Newsome:¡Nunca te rindas!, Never give up!  As an HYLC Advisor I was lucky enough to have known the creator of our club, Mr. David Duran.  His dedication to the young people we serve was unwavering and I strive to be so strong.  It is important for all of us to know that perseverance and hard work pay off!

Hailey:If you could say anything to the students of HHS and hope that it puts a smile on their face or makes their day even better, and anything else you would like to add feel free to share it here!

Ms. Newsome: I would like to tell the Hughson High School student body that you are awesome!  You have gone through a difficult time and you got through it.  You are extremely intelligent and witty young people, thank you for being just the way you are PERFECTLY-imperfect, just the way you are supposed to be!
