Husky In the Hot Seat: Mr. McBride

Alissa Young, Staff Writer

Alissa Young: What is your name and where are you from?

Cody McBride: I grew up in Yucca Valley, California, went to college at UC Riverside before moving up here

Alissa Young: What grades do you teach?

Cody McBride: English 9 & 12

Alissa Young: Where did you teach previously?

Cody McBride: I worked as a substitute teacher in SoCal for 2 years then worked at Lincoln HS and Benjamin Holt College Preparatory Academy in Stockton

Alissa Young: What subjects did you teach?

Cody McBride:I taught English 9-12, Journalism, and summer school math

Alissa Young: What inspired you to become a teacher?

Cody McBride: I had a pretty challenging childhood and a family that did not value education. I had a few teachers throughout my life that showed me what my potential was, believed in me, and helped me accomplish things I never would have dreamed of doing. They showed me how to become the person I want to be and my hope is that I can do the same for my students as well.

Alissa Young: What other jobs have you worked before becoming a teacher?

Cody McBride: Before teaching I worked as a custodian in a dance studio, a custodian in a Recreation Center at UCR, an unloader at Walmart, and finally as a sub in SoCal.

Alissa Young: Is there still another career you want to go after?

Cody McBride: I love my career but I would like to continue to branch out from it. Mainly I want to get back into coaching football and possibly basketball again. I coached football for 3 years and basketball for 1. Coaching is the only other professional thing that brings me the same amount of fulfillment and joy as teaching does.

Alissa Young: Do you still enjoy teaching?

Cody McBride: I absolutely love teaching. I have worked incredibly hard to get where I am today and there is never a day that goes by that I regret what I do. I am truly living my dream!

Alissa Young: What do you ask for from your students?

Cody McBride: I ask my students to remain curious to learn for themselves, to grow as critical thinkers, to become the wonderful individuals they are, and to make the most of their years in high school (academically and socially).

Alissa Young: How are you going to inspire your students to do better?

Cody McBride: I try to offer inspiration to my students through a combination of caring for them, offering any available resources I have to guide them, sharing my personal experiences (good and bad) to try to connect with and motivate them, and ultimately listening to them and treating them with the respect and appreciation they deserve.

Alissa Young: How long are you planning on staying at Hughson High for?

Cody McBride: The goal is to settle down and create a lifelong career here at Hughson High School. I love the community, the students, and my fellow staff members and am honored to work in such a great place

Alissa Young: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Cody McBride: I wouldn’t be who I am today if I didn’t have my loving family by my side. I am very thankful for them and incredibly excited for our baby on the way (due in April/May)!
