Last Friday, the Hughson High School Football team played against Central Valley at home. One of the top performers of the game was Max Mankins. Mankins, a junior at HHS, is a tight end and defensive end. He had an interception and tackle on defense. On offense, he had three catches for 31 yards, and a touchdown. He stated, “I was excited going into the game. It was our home opener and we hadn’t played a game here since state.”
Mankins said, “I was thinking that it’s going pretty good so far but we need to step it up for the next three quarters.” He adds on, “After the first half I was thinking we played well but just need to finish in the second half.” Max evaluated his performance and mentioned, “I think I performed well, but still have a lot of improvement to make.”
“I’m excited to play Pitman, that should be our biggest challenge yet this year.” The Hughson High Football team will be playing against Pitman High School at Turlock High’s field this Friday.
Another one of the top performers from last Friday’s game against Central Valley was Larkin Meyer. Larkin shares with us how much he practices and what he does to let his body recover for upcoming games. Larkin said “After games I will ice bruises and drink lots of water to get hydrated… Eating good food and staying hydrated helped as well.”
Larkin also stated “My route was to run to the middle and sit or find space. Robert saw I had space and threw me the ball. I put a move on a defender and scored, my coaches and teammates would probably say they can trust me to make a play.” Larkin expresses he would love to continue playing as a student athlete in the future, but he evaluates the benefits and set-backs. “Being a student athlete means I can’t do any extracurricular activities sometimes and it is hard to manage practice and homework sometimes if there is a lot it definitely takes away from friends and family.”
