This year, Hughson High has seen a plethora of new teachers. This week, Mr. Charly Garza is being highlighted as a first year teacher at HHS. Mr. Garza actually became a Hughson Alumni after his graduation in the spring of 1994 and attended Merced Community College and Stanislaus State. This will be his 24th year as an educator. The first 13 years of his career were spent at the Hickman School district. While this may be his first year at HHS, many students can recall his teaching at Fox Road Elementary school. Of his five children, one, Olivia Garza, is currently enrolled in HHS as a senior.
Garza’s main goal for his students this school year is to, “help them become critical thinkers and to have a better understanding of what makes a person who they are by attempting to understand the circumstances and environments that contribute to people’s decisions.” His favorite part of the classroom without a doubt are his students because, “It is a joy to see young people engaged in learning and showing an interest in the people and events that shaped our world. It is also a blessing to get to know so many multifaceted people; students who are involved in so many things and who each have a unique life story.”
Garza wanted to become a teacher to become a positive influence on young people. Mr. Garza’s biggest inspiration to be a teacher came from his father in law, Dan Matthew. According to Garza, “he has always advised me to see every day as an opportunity to build relationships with students. I believe this is the greatest advice one could give an educator.”
