A new photography program led by Hughson High School teacher Jack Bland is continuing at BJD this school year.
Bland, who has taught photography for 17 years, originally developed the Hughson Community photography project while finishing his master’s degree in education. That project hopes to reach students who are disengaged or considered “at-risk” by using visual arts to build connection and confidence.
Instead of focusing only on technical skills, Bland’s approach pushes participants to get out into their community, notice everyday details, and tell stories through images. Bland stated that he hopes work like this “can strengthen a student’s sense of belonging and boost self-efficacy.”
Classes at BJD meet twice a month throughout the school year. “Mr. Bland’s photography class was inspiring and was a great activity to be a part of,” said Jhett Ruiz, a student in the program.
The steady schedule is designed to allow students to develop both their photographic skills and a deeper relationship with Bland and themselves. Another student, Karli Britt, who is a part of the program, stated, “It was fun going around with Mr. Bland, learning how to use a camera and take pictures of cool things in different places.”
The program will end with photos being displayed at the County Office of Education in Modesto.
