As we all know a lot of things have changed this school year for Hughson High School. We have started distance learning and we are all getting used to doing school online but what about the school clubs? Hispanic Youth Leadership Council or HYLC is one of many clubs at Hughson High School. HYLC leader, Mrs. Newsome would like everyone to know that students are still able to join.

Though it has been difficult, the members are still able to contact each other. “We have had a leadership meeting, a club meeting, and a leadership conference, all via Zoom.  It is a challenge but the HYLC creed is ¡Nunca te rindas!  Never give up!  So we are powering through!” Mrs. Newsome shared. The club also had the opportunity to meet with 3 guest speakers through Zoom.  According to Mrs. Newsome, they met with, “Bryan Marks from MJC, he spoke on Leadership (doing what you can do).  Then we heard from Dina Brambila, a psychologist, on mental health and self-confidence, and we also heard from Yamilet Villadolid on the Census 2020 and Voter Registration.”

Maria Yup a senior at Hughson school and co-president of HYLC said “Most of our activities require teamwork and us being online is not allowing us to do that. A lot of our usual activities got cancelled because we are a huge club and we can’t really get together to do the activities at this time.” According to Maria the club had a zoom meeting and it went well, they had several members and officers show up to the online meeting.

Though this year has had a rough start kids are still able to be active in school clubs. HYLC currently has 92 members. Mrs Newsome would like everyone to know that if you want to join HYLC you can, the google classroom code is ezgc5ga and you do not need to be hispanic.
