Starting a new school always requires us to face change. One of the changes students at Hughson High are faced with is that during lunch this year only seniors are allowed in the quad. This restriction has sparked a variety of reactions from the HHS student body.

Some people are for it due to the various benefits.  Principal Lighthall explained “There were too many people in the quad and it was difficult for kids to even move around.”  Lighthall continued by stating, “Everything that’s available in the quad is available everywhere else: shade, trees, space, lunch, food is all available in other areas; there’s nothing unique about doing that in the quad vs other areas.”

There were major issues last year during lunch. For example there was an overcrowding problem that caused one of the main entrances onto the campus to be blocked. The quad restrictions seem to have alleviated these problems.

There are students who have expressed distaste for this rule. While this restriction possesses good intent for positive change in issues noticed by staff and students, some people believe that there could have been a better solution.

Hudson Conners, a senior at Hughson High school stated he doesn’t think the quad should be sectioned off. “There’s things that they can do that doesn’t include making 3/4th of the campus stay more on one side than the other,” Conners added.

Both sides of the argument have valid points about the separation in the quad. While some may find it inconvenient it does have benefits like crowd prevention.
