Recently, companies such as Samsung and LG Electronics have tried to incorporate AI into some home appliances showcasing them at EuroCucina. EuroCucina is the only major kitchen trade show in Europe, and the most important on a global scale taking place every two years at Fiera Milano, Italy. Samsung has said that “it has set up a 964-square-meter booth at EuroCucina to showcase its latest built-in products” which are all linked to its SmartThings ecosystem to maximize connectivity and boost user conveniences. Most of the appliances showcased by Samsung consisted of their Bespoke AI as well as premium built in kitchen products. Samsung has said they revealed three new products with new innovative features to suit the European lifestyles such as multiple screens.
Samsung has also made an innovative induction cook top which eliminates dead zones called the Anyplace induction cook top. According to Samsung the Anyplace induction cook top creates a larger cooking surface than the conventional 4 ring induction cook top by using a sheet coil heating mechanism. The Anyplace cook top is also powered by AI which allows it to detect boiling liquid and automatically adjust the cook settings to prevent spillover and unnecessary messes. The Bespoke AI Laundry Combo gives users the ability to take calls while doing laundry without the use of their hand as well as users can get useful information about their laundry. Samsung believes the most important thing with AI products is the convenience which is why the screens on the machines can be connected to control other devices, allowing heightened convenience through the SmartThings ecosystem.
AI will now also be able to identify ingredients in a dish and adjust the oven’s temperature automatically. Not only will it automatically adjust temperature, it will also learn about the user’s habits. When the AI learns the user’s habits well enough they could automatically make coffee at 7 AM during weekdays and 9 AM during weekends. Because the AI is connected to one central system, they are also able to use the AI to answer simple questions and follow some commands such as closing blinds, changing lighting or playing a song. The machines are also able to alert you if a part will need replacing soon, allowing people to prepare and not get rid of the entire thing just because they don’t know what part is broken. These innovations also allow the AI to optimize energy usage allowing them to reduce the total energy consumption by 15% globally.
But with all of the great features, AI powered appliances also come along with a hefty cost ranging upward of $1800 for Samsung Fridges under the Family Hub according to Baptiste Aelbrecht & Jacques Mojsilovic. If you have money to spend or are looking for a futuristic home, AI appliances are a great choice as they allow for a more convenient life by ridding people of menial tasks. But the price will likely stay on the higher end for a while meaning most won’t have access to these incredible devices.
