Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and that means families are sending out their invites and planning the delicious meals they’ll whip up for everyone. There is one question that remains, however: What is the best Thanksgiving dish? I was determined to get an answer, so I interviewed multiple students attending Hughson High School and had them rank eleven common Thanksgiving dishes. The results were staggering—they even shocked me! Without further ado, let’s dive in and uncover the mystery of the century: what satisfies a teen’s insatiable hunger during Thanksgiving?
11. Cranberry Sauce
Coming in last place is cranberry sauce. Is anybody surprised? Many people I interviewed have never had cranberry sauce before, and many others weren’t impressed by it. People described it as a futuristic, gelatinous sweet-tart that you would only dare to eat if it were the end of the world (very dramatic, isn’t it?).
10. Stuffing
Honestly, I can’t even be mad about this. Seriously—if you think about it, stuffing is just soggy bread with bouillon seasoning! Okay, obviously there’s more to it than that, but it tastes like it! The people I interviewed felt the same. Everyone compared it to slop, while one outlier said it’s what they look forward to the most at Thanksgiving. (I’m sorry, if you’re reading this!)
9. Corn
This wasn’t a shocking result either. None of the people I interviewed hate it or feel disgusted by it, but it’s just… corn. Yeah, it’s buttery deliciousness and it’s addictive, but it’s nothing spectacular in comparison to other dishes. Sorry, corn—you just don’t stand out all that much!
8. Green Bean Casserole
Green bean casserole is one of those dishes that not everyone has had, but plenty still have it at their table when Thanksgiving rolls around. Honestly, green bean casserole is a hit or miss; that’s why it scored lower. One weird texture or off taste is all it takes to throw some people off. Although grandmas can cook up some killer casserole, unfortunately, others aren’t so good at it.
7. Collard Greens
Collard greens are a staple during Thanksgiving, especially for families who come from the South. A few of the people I interviewed have never tried it, and others ranked it low, saying the texture threw them off. Overall, people feel pretty neutral toward this fiber-packed dish.
6. Mac and Cheese
My heart was hurt when I rounded up the results, frankly. Seriously—only sixth place?! As much as I hate to admit it, statistics don’t lie. Mac and cheese has been ranked a solid six. It’s understandable if you think about it, really. Surely you can think of a time when you thought you were going to bite into the best gooey cheesiness ever, only to be extremely let down. Too watery, too dry, no flavor, oversalted… everyone has had one painfully mediocre bite of mac and cheese in their life. That’s why mac and cheese lands here. Don’t worry—your delicious cheesiness will always be number one in my heart, Mac and Cheese!
5. Mashed Potatoes
We have reached the top five now, with mashed potatoes ranking fifth. With the buttery taste and texture that melts in your mouth, mashed potatoes are a Thanksgiving dish that many students here at Hughson High look forward to. Get out those potatoes and peelers, ’cause these kids are drooling for mashed potatoes this year!
4. Turkey
When many people think of Thanksgiving, they think of turkey! It’s only natural that turkey would rank this high on the dish ranking. When cooked right, tender and juicy turkey is only enhanced by the crispy, crunchy, and flavorful skin. It’s a table centerpiece that will have your guests drooling the second they walk into your house!
3. Ham
With this article, the turkey vs. ham war is finally over—ham is better! It doesn’t matter what kind—honey ham or hickory BBQ—ham tastes amazing! The kids love it, the adults love it, heck, even the dog loves it! People will definitely be looking forward to their seasonal ham this year, which is why it’s ranked in third place.
2. Pie
Oh, pie… the dish that requires me to exit my grandparents’ house via helicopter every year. Pie is delicious! Everyone I interviewed agrees as well. Pie is honestly a must for any Thanksgiving dinner, because what’s better than magically growing a second stomach once the pie is brought out? Whether it’s apple, pecan, or pumpkin pie—the students of Hughson High School yearn for pie this Thanksgiving!
1. Bread Rolls
The supreme of the supreme, our mystery on the most delicious Thanksgiving dish has come to an end. Ranking first place is the beloved bread rolls! Is it the carb loading or the creativity of creating your own Thanksgiving sandwich that makes these rolls so loved? Who cares! Bread rolls take the win as the most beloved Thanksgiving dish. Make sure to stock up on extra rolls this holiday season—you don’t want Uncle Sam and Aunt Tammy devising a plan to snag a bag of rolls to take home!
In actuality, the food is only part of what makes Thanksgiving so special. The most memorable part is gathering around the table with your family—laughing, telling stories, and recalling good times. Making memories is what matters most. Hold your family close this season, enjoy the warmth and joy of spending time with loved ones, and have a blessed Thanksgiving!
