From simple grammar checkers to study apps that can mimic a quiz given to you by a real-life tutor, AI is changing how students study and complete their work at a rapid pace. While many see AI as cheating, some see it as a tool, like a calculator or spellcheck.
One of the biggest ways AI is affecting homework is through writing help. Different forms can fix wording and grammar, or organize entire ideas. While some may believe that this can be beneficial to students, giving them an edge to start essays or change up rough drafts, I believe I share the concerns of many teachers who worry about the dependency this behavior encourages.
AI is being quickly weaved into apps, websites, and platforms across the board. It can be difficult to encourage students to focus on their own critical thinking when these tools are so easily accessible. Some schools are changing their policies, just as some teachers are changing their assignments to focus more on allowing students to think independently.
As AI constantly evolves, it’s obvious that homework and studying are unlikely to ever look the same again. There are many important questions to be asked regarding the use of AI in education, but currently I believe the most important question is of how students can use it wisely, instead of irresponsibly. AI is, unfortunately, not going anywhere. Teachers and students alike have to learn to find the balance.
