Since we’re now in December, it’s the perfect time to look back at all the great things that happened in November! It’s important to stay positive even when times are rough, so let’s dive in and see what uplifting news we have for today.
Global Literacy Rates
As of November 2025, global literacy is at the highest level it has ever been. The biggest improvements were seen in East Asia and Africa due to millions of children gaining access to schooling over the past ten years. With literacy rates rising, more children will have a better chance of getting jobs, escaping poverty, and gaining economic independence.
This improvement is thanks to the relentless efforts of teachers and non-profit organizations. If people continue supporting these children, millions more will be able to learn to read as well.
Decrease in Deforestation
From celebrating an increase to celebrating a decrease—deforestation has dropped significantly this month, continuing a trend for the third decade in a row! Between 1990 and 2000, 17.6 million hectares of forest were lost. The amount for 2015–2025? Just 10.9 million hectares.
It is also reported that 90% of the forest previously destroyed by deforestation has begun naturally repairing itself. To keep moving toward a healthier world, people must continue supporting efforts to restore and protect forests.
Free Grocery Store
In 2024, a grocery store in Baltimore called The Pratt Free Market opened inside the Enoch Pratt Free Library. As of November 2025, the store has expanded with seventeen additional fridges, eleven food pantries, and three pet pantries.
This store provides everything from fresh produce to feminine hygiene products, baby formula, and diapers. It is 90% volunteer-run and has no requirements for shopping there. With this market, people experiencing homelessness and struggling families can access the essentials they need to care for themselves.
