On Wednesday, January 7th, the Hughson Huskies Wrestling team had a dual meet against the Ripon Indians. In previous years, the Indians have been a hard match up for the Huskies, but this season they really showed their hard work and dedication to the sport.
One of the varsity wrestlers, Caden Bowerman, was matched up against a junior, which was good competition for him. When we interviewed him he said, “It was a tough match, but I was determined to win. He got me down for a little bit, which tied the match, but I needed a major to win. A major means being up by nine points to win the match, which I successfully accomplished, and I won the match 13-4.” Bowerman has been a great addition to the varsity wrestling team bringing in great results and confidence to the team.
A wrestler from the JV team, Kai Melton, wrestled in the 144 weight class and had a tough day. He stated, “I wrestled a pretty good match, even though it did not end how I wanted it to. The ending score was 8-6 with lots of room for improvement. This is my first year wrestling and it is a great experience so far. I have learned a lot and highly recommend it to others.” Kai has made great growth from the beginning of the season to now, and he is planning on continuing that growth.
Violet Blake, a Mat Maid for the wrestling program, was there and able to see a few matches and had some words to say, “I think that the wrestlers had a great meet overall and showed some great fight. Being able to watch the female wrestlers wrestle for the first time was super cool, I think that it is so awesome that they enjoy a sport most people find too hard.”
Another viewer of the matches was Hughson High school’s very own first year math teacher, Ryan Tury, and he came to the matches to support some of his students. He thinks it’s awesome and loves to see some of his favorite students do what they love. The next wrestling meet is January 14th at Sonora Highschool at 5:30 pm, and we can’t wait to see more from these athletes!
